My name is Stephanie, and I am thrilled to be your new PhD Society president. Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new #TeamUofG postgraduate researchers (PGRs) and a “welcome back!” to returning PGRs. You all have elected a fantastic team to lead the society this year, and there are already some terrific things in the works that we can’t wait to share with you!
This year has clearly presented all of us with many challenges, and much uncertainty lingers, however I hope we are able to derive support and strength from one another as we persevere. Akin to teenagers in the world of academia, as PGRs, we often awkwardly navigate the boundaries between student and staff as we endeavor to develop our own voices and identities as researchers. However, it’s important to keep in mind that, ultimately, we are all pursuing the same goal and therefore need not face our journeys alone.
“If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
The PhD Society has been an inimitable source of enrichment for me during my PhD journey thus far. As a team, we aim to build a close-knit home-away-from-home community for all PGRs at UofG. The tremendous growth the society has experienced in the two years since it was founded serves as a testament to this need for community. We aim to enrich your overall PhD experience here at University of Glasgow by cultivating a range of opportunities for you to enhance your skills, grow your networks and make friends for a lifetime. Of course, not everything is for everyone, but we will strive to ensure there will be something for everyone to look forward to this year. Whether you join one of our committees or attend our events, I look forward to working with you all this year as we continue to build and strengthen our community!
Sincerely,

“Steph”
President
